In this article, I covered the Standard Deliverables of Instrumentation prepared by EPC companies to execute EPC projects.
Introduction
If you are an instrumentation engineer and working in EPC companies or want to work in EPC companies then this article will really help you.
The cost of the EPC projects is estimated in four phases Feasibility, Conceptual, FEED, and detailed Design respectively.
During these four phases, there are multiple documents that need to be prepared by individual engineering disciplines.
SR NO. | PROJECT COST ESTIMATION phases |
---|---|
1 | FEASIBILITY STUDY |
2 | CONCEPTUAL STUDY |
3 | BASIC / FULL FEED |
4 | DETAILED DESIGN |
In this article, I am covering the Standard Deliverables of Instrumentation which is prepared by C&I Discipline.
This may differ from industry to industry but more-or-less these documents are the same.
if you want to know what documents have to be prepared by Other disciplines like (Process, Civil, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical, HSE, Material, and Quality) then pls comment.
1. FEASIBILITY STUDY
A feasibility study defines the technical and economical feasibility of the project and it is a very important step.
without economic benefits, there are no projects that will work.
The control and Instrumentation department prepared the listed documents during the feasibility study.
SR NO. | I & C DOCUMENTS DURING THE FEASIBILITY STUDY |
---|---|
1 | Control & Instrumentation Philosophy |
2 | Pipeline Leak Detection Philosophy |
3 | Metering Philosophy |
4 | Telecomms Philosophy |
5 | Control and Safety System Topology Diagram |
6 | Telecoms Block Diagram |
2. CONCEPTUAL STUDY
The conceptual study covers the concept of facilities with probability and execution risk in line with client requirements and business plan.
This study became the base of FEED(Front-end engineering design) which is the next step after the conceptual study.
But in this phase, the deliverable of instrumentation is the same as the Feasibility study with some extra details.

1 | Instrumentation & Control System Philosophy |
2 | Pipeline Leak Detection Philosophy |
3 | Metering Philosophy |
4 | Telecomms Philosophy |
5 | Control and Safety System Topology Diagram |
6 | Overall Telecommunication System Block Diagram |
3. BASIC FEED (FRONT END ENGINEERING DESIGN)
In the FEED phase, the selected concept from CONCEPTUAL STUDY to the level where a section of the final project will be made. And in the Basic FEED budget quotes for equipment and bulks are utilized.
