How to Troubleshoot Pressure and Temperature Gauges

In this article, you will find how you can troubleshoot the Pressure and Temperature Gauges problems and do the maintenance.

Introduction

Gauges are used everywhere in a plant. We face regular problems in the pressure gauge and temperature gauge in the plant.

We will see in this article the maintenance jobs which come in a pressure gauge and temperature gauge.

Pressure gauge-related maintenance jobs.

Problem> Pressure gauge always showing 0

Solutions:

  1. The main isolation valve in the process line will be isolated. Open the isolation valve.
  2. The isolation valve in the manifold will be isolated. Open the isolation valve.
  3. Choking in the isolation valve or manifold or line or pressure gauge will be there. Identify the choking and dechoke it.
  4. Pressure gauge can be faulty. Replace the pressure gauge after checking the pressure gauge.

Problem> Pressure gauge always showing a low value

Solutions:

  1. The main isolation valve in the process line will be throttled. Open the isolation valve.
  2. The isolation valve in the manifold will be throttled. Open the isolation valve.
  3. Choking in the isolation valve or manifold or line or pressure gauge will be there. Identify the choking and dechoke it.
  4. Leakage in the tube or manifold or pressure gauge fitting will be there. Attend the leakage.
  5. Pressure gauges can be faulty. Replace the pressure gauge after checking the pressure gauge.

Problem> Pressure gauge showing high value

Solutions:

  1. Flush the pressure gauge and take it again in line.
  2. Check the pressure gauge’s calibration. Set it using zero and span screws.

Problem> Pressure gauge value fluctuating very high

Solution:

  1. Try installing pressure gauge with glycerin or with restrictor/snubber.

Temperature gauge related maintenance jobs.

Problem> Temperature gauge always showing lower value

Solutions:

  1. Temperature gauge insertion length is not proper. Remove the temperature gauge, check the insertion length, and install the proper temperature gauge.
  2. The coating on the temperature gauge or thermowell will be there. Clean the temperature gauge or thermowell whichever is having coating.
  3. Check the calibration of the temperature gauge. Set the needle of the temperature gauge properly.

Problem> Temperature gauge always showing a higher value

Solution:

  1. Check the calibration of the temperature gauge. Set the needle of the temperature gauge properly.

Problem> Temperature gauge value fluctuating very high

Solution:

  1. Try installing a temperature gauge with glycerin.

We frequently encounter issue of gauges that have the broken glass. So, to avoid this issue, install the gauge in such a way that the gauge does not have vibrations. Vibration can lead to cracks in glass.

Also, activities of mechanical team like dismantling pipe or spool or removing other mechanical components often lead to gauge damage. So, remove the gauge before the mechanical team start their activity.
