How to Troubleshoot Non-contact type level transmitters.

In this article, you will find how you can troubleshoot non-contact type level transmitters with each problem and its solutions.

Introduction

Hello guys. Today we will learn about the maintenance jobs on the non-contact type level transmitters.

We use 2 types of non-contact type level transmitters for measuring the level.

  1. Radar level transmitter
  2. Ultrasonic level transmitter

And face problems with both levels of transmitters. We will see the maintenance jobs for non-contact type level transmitters.

Problem> Level transmitter showing continuously 100 % value but the actual level is not 100 %

Solutions:

  1. Check the level transmitter by removing it. The sensor will be having problems like moisture deposition or any other deposition on it. Clean the sensor.
  2. Check the condition of the sensor. Any dent or damage to the sensor can create this problem. Replace the sensor.
  3. If the sensor is clean, then check the path inside the flange. Sometimes, we find spider webs in services like water level transmitters. Clean the path.
  4. If the level transmitter is used in services like hazardous chemicals or some oil or fuel, then it will be a closed tank or closed vessel. So, do not remove the level transmitter directly. First power reboot it. If the level transmitter used in the water service does not show the actual level by following steps a) and b), then also do a power reboot. This will solve the problem in 95 % of cases. If it does not make the level transmitter ok, then remove the level transmitter and clean it.
  5. Replace the cards one by one. This will solve the problem.
  6. Change the barrier in the marshaling cabinet. The barrier will be faulty.
  7. Change the analog input channel and do the necessary configurations if the above-mentioned steps do not work.

Problem> Level transmitter showing incorrect value

Solutions:

  5. Check whether 4 mA to 20 mA is used or 0 mA to 20 mA signal is used. The same setting should be done in the system like PLC/DCS/ESD. If the setting is different, then there will be different levels.
  6. Check the level coordination diagram and compare the configurations of the level transmitter. Some mistakes will be there which is creating the problem of level mismatch.
  7. Replace the cards one by one. This will solve the problem.
  8. Change the barrier in the marshaling cabinet. The barrier will be faulty.
  9. Change the analog input channel and do the necessary configurations if the above steps do not work.

Problem> Level transmitter showing continuously 0 % but the actual level is not 0 %

Solutions:

  1. The level transmitter will be in the power-off condition. Check the connections. If the connections are ok, then check the voltage. If the voltage is not present, then check the fuse and the barrier in the marshaling cabinet. Replace the fuse or barrier whichever is faulty.
  2. Check the level transmitter by removing it. The sensor will be having problems like moisture deposition or any other deposition on it. Clean the sensor.
  3. Check the condition of the sensor. Any dent or damage to the sensor can create this problem. Replace the sensor.
  4. If the sensor is clean, then check the path inside the flange. Sometimes, we find spider webs in services like water level transmitters.  Clean the path.
  5. If the level transmitter is used in services like hazardous chemicals or some oil, then it will be a closed tank or vessel. So, do not remove the level transmitter. First power reboot it. If the level transmitter used in the water service does not show the actual level by following steps a) and b), then also do a power reboot. This will solve the problem in 95 % of cases.
  6. Replace the cards one by one. This will solve the problem.
  7. Change the analog input channel and do the necessary configurations if the above steps do not work.
